GNU Telephony Revival

How TwoSquares is preparing a careful, community-driven revival while preserving the original GNU Telephony record.

The revival is in its foundation stage. No new production-ready software or supported release has been announced.

1. Purpose

The revival aims to explore useful, modern free software for open communications while respecting the technical work, licences, contributors, and history of the original GNU Telephony ecosystem.

The historical archive will remain stable. New work will use separate current documentation, public source repositories, transparent status labels, and an open contribution process.

2. Initial priorities

  • •Preserve and verify historical source code, documentation, and releases.
  • •Define a realistic modern problem statement before selecting implementation technologies.
  • •Publish governance, security, licensing, and contribution policies before accepting production code.
  • •Build a contributor community around clear, reviewable milestones.
  • •Avoid unsupported claims about compatibility, privacy, encryption, or operational readiness.

3. Stewardship

TwoSquares coordinates the website, preservation programme, and early revival planning. This does not imply ownership of the original GNU software or appointment by the GNU Project or Free Software Foundation.

People with relevant technical experience, historical knowledge, source archives, documentation, or community-building skills are invited to make contact.
